Tsunami in Khao Lak – History & Safety

What Visitors Should Know

Khao Lak is today known as a peaceful and beautiful destination in Thailand. At the same time, it is also a place with an important history. In December 2004, the tsunami had a major impact here. Today, visitors can see how safety systems have improved significantly.

🌊 Memorial Sites

One of the most important places is Police Boat T813 in Ban Nam Khem. The boat was carried far inland and is now a memorial. Another place is the Tsunami Memorial Park. 👉 These are not typical tourist attractions, but places of remembrance.

🚨 Warning System in Khao Lak

Since 2004, Thailand has developed modern safety systems. In Khao Lak, there are two main warning towers (Nang Thong & Bang Niang) equipped with loudspeakers for emergency announcements.

📡 Deep-Sea Detection System

Thailand operates detection buoys: Station 23461 (Andaman Sea) and Station 23401 (Indian Ocean). 👉 These systems help detect unusual wave activity early and provide advance warning.

⏱ Evacuation & Safety

There is generally 30 minutes to over 1 hour available for evacuation. In Khao Lak you will find: Clearly marked evacuation routes, safe zones on higher ground, and public warning systems.

🔊 Weekly System Test

The system is tested every Wednesday at 08:00 AM. A signal followed by the Thai national anthem will be played. 👉 This is only a routine test – not an emergency.
